Poems in the style of Jack Prelutsky

We have been looking at nonsense poetry in 5/4 Deers for the past 2 weeks.

We watched and read Jack Pelutsky's Ebeneezer Bleezer's Ice cream store poem

Then came up with some verses of our own - using alliteration and rhyme.

Check out Jordan's, Charlotte's, Poppy's, Emily's and Charlie's below:

And asked to include these words within our 100 words:

Shadows
Carefully
Darkness
Clouds
Moon

We were trying to include different sentence starters and connectives in our writing. Take a look at some of our attempts below, or click kidblog (on the right hand side) to view more.

It was a dark gloomy night and I was walking down the street all by my self in darkness  I could hear footsteps behind me smacking on the pavement .I looked up and I could see a full moon and see all the dark and glooming glowing  clouds .I could see a shadow behind me I was shaking becouse I was really scared.I turned and walked to a shop I carefully opened a creaky ,dusty door  then I  went to the shelves. Suddenly I found load of mobiles I picked one up and took it to a counter  I  paid this old woman she had no voice I ran home.

I walked down a scary ally darkness was everywhere there was so many cobwebs. I was so scared i heard dirty water drip down on the cobble road. The moon shone for miles the wind was as loud as a pack of hungry wolves. The clouds were as black as batmans cape  suddenly smelt blood everywhere i heard  screaming come from every gloomy corner .I ran down a left ally but i regreted it there was a huge bulldog it chased me for miles and miles . I ran in a shop and got a phone but i did,nt need it i made it out ALIVE i am so proud of my self

I walked carefully into the horrible, scary street i felt pettrified  i did not like it at all. Suddenly there was a shadow creep behind me i screemed but it was only a colossal hairy spider. The darkness spred around the street, the clouds got darker and crepyer. The moon got brighter untill it lit up the hole street but suddenley there was a CRASH and a BANG i yelled as loud as i possobley could, Then every thing went silent i woke up and i found myself laying on the ground. The ground was as rough as a elephants back.I never like the dark again!

I walked down a dark scarey Alleyway when I was seeing a gloomy shadow as black as black liquerice Then all of a sudden there was some grey clouds raining on the floor after there was a flash it was the Moon as bright as some headlights it looked amazing i carefully walked on. It started getting darker and Darker so i ran across the brick hard wall. There was bricks falling out of the flats I was worried it was going to hit me. This alleyway was starting to freak me out but at last I  aventully got out out of the alley I was glad.

One night there was a man who was walking down a dark ally way and suddenly he herd howling so he  turned around and there  saw a lot of tall shadows. carefully he baked off but the shadows kept  following him and the shadows faded into the clouds and the darkness rose into the ally. The moon faded and faded in till it was no longer to be seen but suddenly a hand reached on the moon the man was terrified by what was happening he did not now what was going so he quickly ran into a apartment.

I walked down a dark alley called darkness street the dark shadows where spooky black and grey. The moon was surrounded by spooky clouds. The smell of blood was in the air. I carefully walked down to one of the flats and I knocked on the door and a man opened the door and howled like a werewolf, because he was a changing into a werewolf and he said” get out of my house”. So I turned around and ran for my life so I would not get bit by him, suddenly a big gang of zombies chased me away out of darkness street. I would never go there again.

As I carefully walked down the quiet street I saw these shadow’s behind me.  I was so scared as the half moon shone above me like a car’s head light.  The cloud’s where covering half of the moon but it was still so bright.  The darkness of the night sky freaking me out a bit,  while I was looking at the half moon the shadow’s came  closer I was about to scream but when I let a squeak out someone covered my mouth it was a boy as soon as he un covered my mouth he ran of. I think he hid me . Ever since I am now afraid of the dark.

Diss Royal Anglican Regiment Parade.

The 5/4 Deers, along with all the juniors, walked to Diss town centre this afternoon to watch the Royal Anglican Regiment receive the freedom the town for their duties in Afghanistan.

Our class were very lucky to receive VIP treatment. We had the best view in the house, the front row, as we watched the soldiers march through the town centre with their rifles and bayonets.

Some of us were lucky enough to be to ask one of the soldiers some questions. Others were even interviewed for the local news. It was all very exciting!

As well as celebrating the return of these brave soldiers. We also thought about the soldiers who haven't returned. We will think about them again on 11th November.

How to make a Viking longboat...

We have made Viking longboats this week. We constructed and decorated our dragonboats using card, art straws, barbecue skewers, masking tape and paper.

Please watch the videos below from Isobel and Joseph to find out how to make them!

Viking shields!

We have been making Viking shields in class.  First we looked at different Viking designs and chose two colours to decorate the shield. Then we made a metal 'boss' for the centre of our shield using a paper bowl and tin foil. Finally we attached a handle to the back.

During our Viking work this term we have found out that found Vikings, called Beserkers, used to bite the edge of their shield to scare their opponents. Vikings also used the metal boss in the centre of the shield to hit their enemies with.

Extra Extra! Read All About It!

In class this week we have been writing newspaper reports about the Vikings' attack of Lindisfarne in 793AD. We imagined that we were reporting on the story the next day, and had to write a report for the local paper.

We each had to decide on a name for our paper, like The Viking Times or The Daily Viking Mail. Then we decided on a headline that included either homophones or alliteration. We each chose a picture and wrote a caption and finally we had to be sure that we had included answers to the 5 w's that all newspaper reports answer - who, what, when, where, why.

Please click on the pictures below for a larger version of each newspaper article.

Our Skype chat with a Viking

On Friday we were very lucky to have been able to chat to a real life Viking!

We used a webcam, microphone and Skype to talk to Asbjorn Thorvaltson. We asked him questions, and listened to everything he had to tell us about life as a Viking warrior.

Some of the things we found out were:

  • that the nickname for a Viking sword was leg-biter.
  • each Viking warrior carried a smaller dagger called a seax - given to a warrior by his father.
  • the chain mail that warrior's wore would have taken a year to make.
  • each longboat carried 64 warriors.
  • Viking warriors wore Thor's hammer around their neck, hoping that if they died in battle they would go to Asgard (heaven).
  • it took about 2 days to travel to Lindisfarne from Scandinavia.
  • the only food on board the longboat would have been dried fish!

Thank you for taking the time to talk to us Asbjorn!

Harvest at Roydon Church

This morning the 5/4 Deers, along with the rest of the juniors, walked down to the church to celebrate harvest and give thanks.

We had a lovely service which included hymns, songs and poems. Each class had to perform/read something. We decided to read some of our acrostic poems.

These were the superb poems that we chose to read aloud in the church (please click them to make each one larger):
