Our Skype chat with a Viking

On Friday we were very lucky to have been able to chat to a real life Viking!

We used a webcam, microphone and Skype to talk to Asbjorn Thorvaltson. We asked him questions, and listened to everything he had to tell us about life as a Viking warrior.

Some of the things we found out were:

  • that the nickname for a Viking sword was leg-biter.
  • each Viking warrior carried a smaller dagger called a seax - given to a warrior by his father.
  • the chain mail that warrior's wore would have taken a year to make.
  • each longboat carried 64 warriors.
  • Viking warriors wore Thor's hammer around their neck, hoping that if they died in battle they would go to Asgard (heaven).
  • it took about 2 days to travel to Lindisfarne from Scandinavia.
  • the only food on board the longboat would have been dried fish!

Thank you for taking the time to talk to us Asbjorn!

  1. Wow Deers! This is amazing - a real life Viking. I don't think I'd have survived on a Viking boat with only dried fish - where was the chocolate cake?

  2. Well done Deers! Carla and her family visited a Viking centre in Yorkshire and we were really impressed with how much she knew about the Vikings! Mrs Oslavio
